Bert was born in South Africa- the youngest of five children of a pastor family. Bert studied medicine at the University of Pretoria, after which he had 2 years compulsory military training service during which he was actively involved in the Bush War as a medical officer. After a short locum in Taranaki in 1996 Bert decided to move to New Zealand due to an uncertain future in South Africa because of crime, violence and corruption. He has been here for the past 20 years, obtaining Fellowship of the College of GPs. He has special interest in minor surgery.
Hobbies include road motorbikes, squash, golf, hunting and diving. Bert is married to Alethea and has 2 adult sons. Bert is a member of Waikanae Baptist church.
